Ford Winter Tyres

Quality winter tyres from our specialist service centres

Make sure you get the performance that you expect from your Ford by switching to Ford approved winter tyres. Standard tyres harden at temperatures below 7°C and no longer provide optimum grip, which can compromise your car’s performance when accelerating and braking. Fitting Ford winter tyres is crucial if you want your vehicle to deliver the performance it was made too. Contact your local Group 1 Ford dealership to discuss the winter tyres that would be most suitable for your vehicle model.

What are Ford winter tyres?

When temperatures drop below 7°C, and the roads become slippery is when it’s time to change to Ford winter tyres. Unlike snow and ice tyres, winter tyres do not have metal studs poking out of the treads. Ford winter tyres provide more traction on slippery surfaces and are better at clearing standing water, making them far more effective than summer tyres.

Ford winter tyres should be used between November and March, as they provide more grip on the roads in colder conditions compared to other tyres. To ensure your safety and that of other road users, we highly recommend that you change to winter tyres, especially in icy weather conditions. When you get winter tyres from Group 1 Ford, you’ll not only be making your vehicle safer, but you’ll also benefit from optimum driving pleasure.

How do Ford winter tyres work?

Achieving optimum traction during the winter is essential, and Ford winter tyres deliver just that. Winter tyres are different from conventional tyres because they have deep grooves and narrow cuts built into the tread, which prevents the tyres from becoming rigid and slipping on the surface of the road. Winter tyres are designed to disperse water and snow evenly, allowing the rubber to move around and improve your Ford’s contact with the road.

How are Ford winter tyres different from summer tyres?

There are three main ways in which Ford winter tyres differ from summer tyres:

  • Compound - Winter tyres are made from a softer compound with more silica in it, which makes them stay supple during cold temperatures. Summer tyres are made from a harder compound and are far more rigid in colder weather conditions, preventing them from gripping to the road.
  • Rubber blocks - The rubber blocks on winter tyres are designed to vibrate when moving, which allows the snow to be shaken out of the grooves. Summer tyres, on the other hand, will become completely clogged, smoothing out the surface and making them extremely dangerous to drive on.
  • Tread pattern - The tread pattern on winter tyres has more grooves cut into them, which helps to displace water and bite into the snow.

How long do Ford winter tyres last?

You will more than likely get the same number of miles out of a set of Ford winter tyres as you would from a set of summer tyres, providing that you only use them between November and March. However, it is very important that you monitor your tyre tread if you continue to use them in warm weather, as they will wear out a lot quicker.
