What’s included in the scrappage scheme?
What is the Ultra Low Emission Zone?
The Ultra Low Emission Zone, also known as ULEZ, is an area in London that has restrictions in place to help with lowering vehicle emissions in the UK's capital city., it covers all vehicles including cars, motorbikes, vans, specialist vehicles and minibuses. The zone currently covers all areas within the North and South Circular Roads, however, from 29 August 2023 it is expanding to cover all London boroughs.
You can check to see if an area is within the zone by using the Government's postcode finder.
If you're driving a vehicle that doesn't meet the ULEZ emissions standards, you will need to pay the £12.50 daily charge. This includes residents of the ULEZ zones.
ULEZ Scrappage Expansion
From Monday 21st August 2023 the Mayor of London has increased the eligibility of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) scrappage scheme, to include all Londoners, awarding a grant of £2,000 for non-compliant cars and £7,000 for vans, to be scrapped or retrofit.
Motorcycles are also eligible for the scheme, with a £1,000 grant available. Wheelchair accessible vehicles and London-based charities and businesses can also benefit from the scheme to prepare for the ULEZ expansion.
The scheme is a bid to help clear London's air and reduce emissions, by encouraging drivers to switch to cleaner, greener modes of transport, either by scrappage or retrofitting vehicles.
Why ULEZ?
In the previous scrappage scheme, over 15,000 polluting vehicles were removed, Transport for London are now wanting to increase these figures by expanding eligibility to all Londoners within one of the 32 ULEZ zones.
Check if your vehicle meets the ULEZ emissions standards and apply for the grant if you are eligible.
