The Brand New 21 Plate

In 1999, the method of new car registrations changed from a new release once a year to twice a year in March and September, using a numbered system with two numbers.

In March the system uses the number of the year, in 2021 this will be '21', replacing the 70 plate from September 2020. In September, a number is placed before the year code. From 2000-2009, this number was '5', from 2010 to 2019 the number as '6' and from 2020 it as '7' to avoid repetitions. In September 2021 the code will be 71.

Audi has released a range of new models including the new A3 and Q3 as well as updating its entire range. The most exciting new models are from the e-tron range.

The e-tron is Audi's first fully electric production model. Available as a Sportback or SUV the e-tron features two powerful electric motors which produces 313 PS as standard and provide all-wheel drive for excellent traction and driving dynamics. The batteries are set low in the body to provide a low centre of gravity which adds to the sporty character of the e-tron. The e-tron features an array of efficient technologies, during 90% of all decelerations the e-tron can recover energy and store this back in the battery. This gives the e-tron a maximum range of 252 miles, whilst the e-tron S is capable of 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds. The e-tron can be charged from 20-80% in 30 minutes using a 120kW charger. Arguably BMW's most exciting new car is the iX3, an all electric version of BMW X3. The iX3 has 286hp which allows it to accelerate from 0-62mph in under 7 seconds as well as driving up to 285 miles on a single charge. The iX3 uses the same X model design and interior luxury as the X3 with BMW i design highlights such as the kidney grille, redesigned 20" wheels and blue accents. The future of driving. 

Also new to the market is the new M3 and M4 models, providing the ultimate driving experience and driving thrills with a 3.0 litre straight six engine producing 510bhp, allowing the M3 to accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds. The M3 and M4 feature a frameless kidney grille, contoured body panels, exclusive BMW M paint colours and a carbon fibre roof. Inside M performance seats, ambient lighting and carbon fibre trims further add to the experience.

Jaguar has just updated the XF and F-PACE for 2021, making them exciting purchases for the 21 plate. Updates include refreshed engines with mild hybrid technology, more aggressive styling, LED technology, a completely new interior featuring an 11.4" touchscreen with smartphone integration and upgraded driving dynamics. 

The F-TYPE, Jaguar's most exciting car was facelifted in 2020 and offers a desirable option to order for the 21 plate. Available with either a 2.0 litre engine or a 5.0 litre V8, the F-TYPE offers supreme driving dynamics in an athletically styled body with advanced technology throughout. 

Finally it is worth considering the line up of plug-in-hybrids Jaguar is offering which combine the performance and practicality of a combustion engine with the efficiency of electric technology. The Jaguar F-PACE and E-PACE are both available with PHEV drivetrains, delivering up to 141 mpg, 35 miles of electric range and 309 PS for acceleration from 0-60mph in under 6 seconds. 

Land Rover released the new Defender in 2020, representing 70 years of innovation and improvement and bringing the Defender into the 21st century. The Defender is available in a range of trims and with a range of engines to suit the needs and budgets of customers. All have the same capability that is expected of a Land Rover whilst also featuring greater comfort and technology. 

Land Rover have also released plug-in-hybrid versions of most of their models, ideal as a new car purchase in 2021 as they combine the practicality and performance of a combustion engine powered car with the efficiency of an electric drivetrain. Most of these models can achieve up to 35 miles on pure electric whilst also being able to accelerate from 0-60mph in less than 6 seconds. 

The Lexus UX300e is a compact, luxury SUV and is the first all-electric Lexus. It combines the style of the UX with the technology of an EV. The UX300e has a front mounted electric motor which produces 204hp and 300Nm of torque allowing for acceleration from 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds, whilst also having an all-electric range of 196 miles. The UX300e can be charged using a rapid charger from 0-80% in less than an hour. 

The battery cells are continually monitored and features advanced cooling and heating systems to protect the batteries. The batteries are designed to last the lifetime of the car and come with an eight year warranty. Lexus has focused on refinement with the introduction of extra insulation and Active Sound Control which transmits natural and ambient sounds to reflect the drive. 

The recently released Mercedes-Benz EQA (pictured) offers an entry point into the all-electric world of Mercedes-EQ cars. 

The EQA 250 has 190hp which allows the car to accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds whilst also being able to drive up to 263 miles on a single charge. Using a rapid charger, the EQA can be charged from 10-80% in just 30 minutes. 

The EQA features familiar EQ design DNA with a black panel radiator grille, continuous light strips front and rear, alloy wheels with optional rose gold-coloured or blue decorative inserts. Inside the EQA benefits from the latest driver assistance programs such as accident avoidance, augmented navigation and ENERGIZING Comfort which can set an interior ambience to help enhance the mood of its occupants. The Edition 1 features perforated leather seats with rose gold-coloured highlights. 

MINI have just released the most recent updates to its hatchback range. This features an updated front and rear, LED lights, refreshed interior technology such as digital drivers display and updated interior ambient lighting. 

There is also the MINI Electric which retains the fun of the MINI range and adds electric technology. Driving the front wheels is a 182hp electric motor with instant torque which propels the electric from 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds. The MINI Electric has a range of up to 144 miles. 

Toyota has released a range of exciting models in the last few months.

The new Mirai blends eye-catching, sporty design with innovative new technology. This is the latest generation of hydrogen technology which is used to create the electricity the car is powered by. The car is filled with hydrogen which is stored in a tank within the car, this is reacts with oxygen to produce electricity which powers the car. The process only emits water as a waste product and with a range of over 400 miles there is no compromise. This is the next step in the age of zero emission driving with greater efficiency, more power and longer range. 

The Yaris Hybrid combines conventional petrol power with electric technology, using a 1.5 litre petrol engine and a 59kW electric motor which allows for fuel economy of up to 68mpg whilst also having the convenience of petrol power and acceleration of 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds. 

VW has a range of new and updated cars including the Golf 8, Tiguan, Arteon, ID.3 and ID.4. 

The ID.4 is an all-electric stylish urban SUV with large alloy wheels, roof rails, recessed door handles and 3D LED rear lights. The design of the car uses light in the place of chrome styling. It has a 77 kWh battery option with a range of 310 miles, meaning no compromise. The ID.4 can be charged from 10-80% using a fast charger in approximately 30 minutes, letting you get back to your journey quickly. 

VW also have a range of new plug-in-hybrid cars such as the Arteon and Passat. Both combine a 1.4 TSI engine with an electric motor and battery to combine powerful performance with low fuel consumption and running costs.
