For our next Inchcape Introduces blog post, we’re heading back to one of our UK dealerships to sit down for a catch-up with Paige Dixon, Receptionist at Volkswagen Telford.
Head to the News section of our blog for all of our other Inchcape Introduces interviews.
How long have you worked for Inchcape, Paige?
I joined Inchcape on the 25th March 2019, so I’ve nearly reached my 1-year mark.
Talk us through your career journey and how you arrived in your current role.
My career journey started in my local Tesco; I was fresh out of sixth form and unsure which direction I wanted my working life to go. I felt that I needed to explore my options so took a work placement overseas in sunny Spain; I wanted to broaden my horizons and develop my people skills.
When I returned home, I was certain that I wanted to work with people in a hands-on role, so I began working in a few local pubs before the opportunity at Inchcape presented itself. A year later and I’m still loving being around people from all walks of life on a daily basis!
What does your role involve on a day-to-day basis?
No two days are ever the same! My day begins at 8am as I wait for the arrival of our service customers. I make sure they are provided with a drink and that their cars are all checked in. After that, the day can be unpredictable.
My main role is showroom hosting, but there is no guessing who could walk in or call the dealership. Throughout my day, I am also gathering content for Volkswagen Telford’s Instagram and Facebook pages, which can be extremely fun. My brand manager, Penny, is always eager to send me off to events or car deliveries which makes for great content for our social media channels.
Which part of your role do you enjoy the most?
Being at the heart of the dealership, I am the first person that everyone sees when they walk into the showroom. I get to meet all kinds of people and get to hear some unbelievable stories. Another great thing about being in the hustle and bustle is the content opportunities I get for our social media, whether it’s capturing a handover or snapping a pic of our customers' pets!
What is the best thing about working at Volkswagen Telford?
It may sound like a cliché, but it’s the people that really make this job the best. Not only are the customers friendly, they’re always willing to get involved and have a laugh with the staff. VW Telford is such a happy and vibrant place, purely down to the people who are here on a day-to-day basis.
What’s the secret to being a great Receptionist?
A bubbly, friendly personality with the ability to juggle! The showroom can be manic at times but having the ability to stay calm and deal with each customer equally is key. You’d be surprised how much of a difference a smile and a chat can make to a customer’s day.
What is it about the automotive industry that most appeals to you?
Progression. There are so many areas in the industry, which means you can really make it into a career for life. It’s an industry that is ever evolving and there are always new things to look at and learn about. There really is never a dull day in the automotive industry!
As you work in a Volkswagen dealership, what’s your favourite VW model?
I absolutely love a Touareg! My favourite is the R-Line Tech, but I’m sure my head will be turned when we have a Touareg R in the dealership.
Lastly, Paige, If you could have any car in the world, what would it be?
I would 100% have a Lamborghini Aventador. I’d take any spec and colour - they’re all showstoppers!
