You’d be hard pressed to find someone who can say with sincerity that they enjoy their morning commute. From overcrowded trains to buses that simply don’t show up, transport woes are all too common. But for those of who take the car to work, it’s the nightmare of heavy traffic that really grinds our gears.
Naturally, a bad commute can ruin anyone’s day. After spending upwards of an hour queuing at lights or crawling along a dual carriageway – by the time you’ve made it – you can barely be bothered. Indeed, a national commuter survey we conducted backed this up. 66% of drivers said commuting on busy and congested roads makes them feel stressed and less motivated, and 33% said it directly affected their performance at work.
To help put an end to many commuters’ misery, we used the Department for Transport’s traffic count data to identify some of the most congested sections of road across the UK. From the M1 by Leeds, over to the M60 in Salford and down to the M25’s cut through Surrey – we went in search of the alternative. Check out our maps below to discover how you could revolutionise your commute by avoiding some of the UK’s most notorious stretches of road.
